Watermelon Harvest

Watermelon harvest season is just ramping up in Gilchrist County. Local farmer BJ Wilkerson, of Wilkerson Farms, said harvesting got underway on Saturday and the price this early in the season is fair. Good growing conditions this year should mean quality melons. Local watermelons are expected to be plentiful for the Memorial Day holiday. The 70th Annual Newberry Watermelon Festival will be held this Saturday, May 16, beginning at 9 a.m. with a Fun Run that will precede the annual Watermelon Parade down Main Street in Newberry. Activities will be held throughout the day on the Destiny Community Church property east of Newberry. There will be crafts, food and activities for children, as well as free watermelon slices. Don’t miss the seed spitting and hog calling contests. At 3 p.m. the 2015 Newberry Watermelon Queen will be crowned.
