Armed suspect taken into custody Monday morning

At approximately 8:48 a.m. on Monday, June 19 Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office received  a call in reference to a subject in the area of Bell Concrete, just north of Bell on US 129, who was holding what appeared to be a large stick.

A second call was received from the area of the  Emergency Operations Center with a description of a white  male in the middle of US 129 armed with a shot gun.  Multiple witnesses  stated that the subject was  demonstrating erratic behavior. Units quickly responded to the location utilizing emergency response lights and sirens to get to the scene.

The weapon was identified as a high powered rifle with a scope, it also appeared to be on a bi-pod. The subject appeared to pose a threat to individuals in the immediate area as well as to deputies  responding. Swift action was taken to secure the area and take the subject into custody without incident.

Through a subsequent follow-up investigation,  it was learned that the weapon in his possession had allegedly been taken during a residential burglary in the immediate  area.

The  subject was identified as Jimmie Leroy Rodgers Jr., date of birth September 19, 1959 of Bell, Florida.  As of Monday, Rodgers was in the custody of the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple felony charges are pending.

Sheriff Bobby Schultz said, “We are thankful to the citizens for prompt action in providing helpful information in reference to the area, description of the subject and behaviors the suspect exhibited. I would like to commend the Sheriff’s Office team for swiftly and safely responding and taking control of the situation.”
