Trenton and Bell do well at National FFA Convention

Lauren Roberts wins the national
Prepared Public Speaking competition
This past week the Trenton and Bell FFA chapters flew to Indianapolis to attend the 91st National FFA Convention. While in Indiana, the Trenton FFA chapter visited several farms in the area. Students learned about the honey and pollination industry at Hunter’s Honey Farm where they bottled their own honey to bring back home. Also, the group toured a family operated apple orchard called Beasley’s and the Fairbanks dairy and swine operation.
Many students from both chapters competed in the Agriscience Fair with their experiments which they won at the state level to qualify, submitted their written research reports, and were interviewed by judges while at the convention. All Gilchrist students excelled and were announced as top 3 finalists.
Austin Bagby and Caitlin Anthony from Bell placed 2nd in the Environmental and Natural Resource Category, Division 6 with their project “Effect of Humate and Humic Acid on Soil Environment.”
From Trenton, Gracie Langford and Alizabeth Morehouse placed 2nd in the Food Processing Category, Division 4 on their team study of “Detecting the Presence of Genetically Engineered Ingredients in Processed Foods.” Also Lauren Roberts won the Environmental and Natural Resource Category Division 6 with her research on “Determining Effective Repellents of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera) on Watermelons.” Lauren Roberts was also named the national winner of the Prepared Public Speaking Leadership Development Event with her speech on the protection of honey bees as agriculture’s most important pollinator. The Trenton FFA chapter was recognized as a National 2 Star Chapter. Also, the Trenton Alumni Chapter received the National Outstanding Award for their continued work supporting the Trenton chapters.
The trip was very memorable, especially with a performance from Garth Brooks that adults and kids alike enjoyed!
On the final session of convention, a very special guest was welcomed to the stage where President Donald Trump addressed the 65,000 FFA members who attended that week.
The students, advisors, and chaperons who traveled had a very long, yet rewarding week at nationals, and are grateful for the community support they received. Gilchrist’s own Bell and Trenton FFA chapters, along with the rest of the Florida FFA Association, was well represented at the National FFA Convention.
